INFORMATION

This route is intended for competent, capable, experienced and fit cyclists on bicycles suitable for being ridden both on roads and (sometimes very rough) tracks. Komoot describes it as “Expert” level. We recommend tyres with a grippy tread of no less than 32mm wide, ideally 35mm - 50mm on a mechanically sound bike designed for such use.

The GPX route file is provided for use on smartphones and trip computers. We recommend ones with a mapping display rather than those with just direction commands, particularly for off-road sections. Have with you a battery pack for recharging en-route and separate back up navigation; equipment failure could spell disaster! Be able and prepared to navigate around possible issues should they arise.

This is a beautiful route through scenic, but remote, areas. As such opportunities for picking up food, drink and other provisions are limited. We strongly recommend you do so at every available opportunity and always carry plenty of supplies; otherwise there is a risk of running out of energy or dehydration, both adversely affecting performance and experience. Similarly, the weather can be changeable: ensure you have warm and waterproof clothing to hand. We do not recommend this route in icy or adverse weather conditions. Ensure you have a contingency plan in the event of mechanical failure or injury - for this reason we recommend not riding solo. Note mobile phone signal is patchy / unavailable on certain remote parts of the route.

Check out and adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and respect the land, land owners, livestock and others. Occasionally gates maybe locked to prevent motor vehicle access and will require bicycles lifted over / wheeled around. Keep well away from and always give way to forestry and wind farm vehicles and machinery for your own safety and that of others. Ride safe!

Wild camping along this route can be a magical experience. Please do so responsibly and leave no trace, respect the land owner and others and take all litter with you. Much advice re wild camping can be found online, including this (no connection to us but good info).
